LearnUs, an Advanced Virtual Educational Platform for the Digital Age

LearnUs is an innovative educational system that utilizes cutting-edge technology, such as AI and immersive media, including VR, AR, and XR. With LearnUs, which will be available to users worldwide, Yonsei University aims to use virtual platforms that go beyond traditional boundaries such as edX or Coursera. Backed by Yonsei’s status as a prestigious higher education institution, LearnUs seeks to expand communication with educational content consumers across the globe.

Establishment of a Digital Creative Campus

In 2017, as part of its digital education program for fostering future talent who will lead the Fourth Industrial Revolution, Yonsei University signed a multilateral agreement on Industry-Academia Cooperation for Digital Education Innovation with digital technology giants, including Samsung Electronics and KT. The university also formed a strategic partnership with Adobe for the first time in Asia. The collaboration enabled all members of the university to use applications and services offered via the Adobe Creative Cloud (ACC) for research, study, and personal development.

A global digital content communication industrial standard, Adobe is the most accessible means of digital communication with a future-oriented system that offers more than 20 desktop and mobile applications for editing pictures, designs, videos, web content, and user interfaces. Yonsei students can use ACC to record and express their ideas and access lecture content through their smartphones and laptops anytime and anywhere, thus enhancing their digital communication skills. Along with new infrastructure, Yonsei University is establishing a variety of educational platforms for digital experience so that all students, regardless of department or major, can develop their digital literacy. The university has introduced new courses, including Content Creation and Visual Storytelling, and established Yonsei Digital Experience Center (Y-DEC) to build a Digital Creative Campus. Y-DEC will host various types of educational events, such as Digital Experience Day, Yonsei Creative Contest, and creative workshops, and will also develop new programs to secure a new foundation for convergence education.

Building Educational ICT Infrastructure

Yonsei University is laying out an educational infrastructure to support capacity-building in the use and production of immersive media, including VR, AR, and XR, and to run programs for strengthening production-related skills. Accordingly, the university established the XR Lab, which is furnished with high-end equipment and software optimized for creating immersive media content, and Y-Scape, where students can experience and explore various immersive media content. In addition, exciting innovations in education of the future are expected, through virtual classrooms for immersive media, beginning with one that utilizes ultra-large images projected on three screens, with a total length of 26 meters and a height of 3 meters.

To help students to translate their ideas into material form, state-of-the-art electronics, including 3D printers and scanners, together with various manufacturing tools, are provided in Makerspace, located on the first floor of the Yonsei-Samsung Library. Special lectures on 3D modeling and practical IoT training are also offered in this space. Yonsei has also established the Y-Smart Space, where students can access various ICT devices, such as smart CCTVs, environmental recognition sensors, and smart glass, to gain an abundance of digital experience. Through these various initiatives, the university is supporting students’ creative and convergence experiments and cooperative work.
